Sophono Implant Surgery Performed on 9 year old at Children’s Memorial Hospital

A surgeon at Children’s Memorial Hospital recently performed the first Alpha 1 bone conduction hearing implantation in the youngest child in Illinois. Clara Beatty, a 9-year-old with Treacher Collins syndrome, has aural atresia, a condition in which her ear canals and middle ears did not develop. The recently FDA approved hearing system provides the latest technology that has many advantages over prior generation devices.

The Sophono Alpha 1 (M) can be used by adults and children as young as 5 years old.

The Alpha 1 (M) is an implantable hearing device and an alternative to traditional bone anchored hearing systems that require a through the skin abutment - the most notable being Baha®. “Many patients suffer with their hearing loss rather than choose a penetrating abutment. The Alpha 1 system will make a very attractive option for these patients,” says Dr. David Friedland, MD, PhD, the Division Chief of Otology and Research at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
